The Missing Village was long-listed for the McKitterick Prize, Society of Authors, London last year. It was inspired by a fisherman on the Cromer pier, asking her if she knew of Shipden. It was situated two miles from the edge of Cromer pier, on the ocean floor. What if an ancient box, with a girl’s name carved into the lid, was found hundreds of years later? Who was she? Why was it found at the bottom of the sea?In 2013, Josh Campbell, a journalist from Brisbane, wrote about the crumbling environment along the eastern coast of England. He hired a photographer to capture homes teetering over cliffs and into the sea near Cromer, Norfolk. Carly is from Broome, Western Australia, a photography tutor, and has been in England for two years searching for her mother, who is on the Missing Persons list.Josh highlights several traumatic storm events from 1447, 1880 and 1953 in his articles. We read of villager’s lives in those times when the North Sea ravaged the face of the eastern coastline, and continued to do so in this area, where several villages are now submerged. Carly and Josh discover more about themselves, and both will grow with conflicts and experiences they meet along the way. What will happen to them when Josh returns to Brisbane? Will Carly find her mother? Will we discover who owned the ancient box?

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
