The Medea is a Greek tragedy written by Euripides in the 5th century BCE. The play tells the story of Medea, a princess from Colchis who marries Jason, a Greek hero, and helps him secure the Golden Fleece. However, when Jason abandons Medea and their two children to marry the daughter of the King of Corinth, Medea seeks revenge. She kills the princess and her own children, and escapes in a chariot sent by her grandfather, the sun god Helios. The play explores themes of betrayal, revenge, and the position of women in society. Medea is portrayed as a powerful and intelligent woman who is driven to madness by her husband’s infidelity and the patriarchal society that she lives in. She is both a victim and a villain, and her actions challenge the audience’s moral and ethical beliefs. The Medea is considered one of Euripides’ greatest works and has influenced many writers and artists throughout history. It is a powerful and thought-provoking play that continues to resonate with audiences today.1912. Murray has translated the text into English rhyming verse with explanatory notes. The Medea, in spite of its background of wonder and enchantment, is not a romantic play but a tragedy of character and situation. It deals, so to speak, not with the romance itself, but with the end of the romance, a thing which is so terribly often the reverse of romantic. For all but the very highest of romances are apt to have just one flaw somewhere, and in the story of Jason and Medea the flaw was of a fatal kind.
