Stern captures the nuances of a merchant family in flux, balancing the weight of ancestral heritage against the pressures of a rapidly changing world. Through vivid characterizations and a keen eye for social detail, the work depicts the rise and fall of fortunes, the complexities of familial loyalty, and the indomitable spirit of a woman determined to preserve her family’s legacy.
