The Martyrdom of Ignatius: A Tragedy, Written in the Year 1740 (1782) is a play written by John Gambold. The play is a retelling of the story of Saint Ignatius, a bishop of Antioch who was martyred in the early days of Christianity. The play follows Ignatius as he is imprisoned and sentenced to death by the Roman Emperor Trajan. Ignatius is steadfast in his faith and refuses to renounce his beliefs, even in the face of torture and death. The play explores themes of faith, martyrdom, and the struggle between religion and political power. Gambold’s writing is poetic and dramatic, capturing the intensity of Ignatius’ final days. The play was written in 1740 but was not published until 1782, after Gambold’s death. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
