The Maid of Elvar is a poem written by Allan Cunningham and published in 1832. It is divided into twelve parts and tells the story of a young woman named Elvar who lives in a remote Scottish village. Elvar is known for her beauty and kind heart, and many men in the village are enamored with her. However, Elvar is in love with a man named Alpin, who has gone to fight in a war.As the story progresses, Elvar is courted by several suitors, but she remains faithful to Alpin. When Alpin returns from the war, he discovers that Elvar has been faithful to him and they are reunited. However, their happiness is short-lived, as a rival suitor named Lorn kidnaps Elvar and takes her away to a distant land.Alpin sets out to rescue Elvar, and after a perilous journey, he finally finds her. However, Elvar has been taken by Lorn’s mother, a powerful sorceress, who has put a spell on her. Alpin must use all his wit and strength to break the spell and rescue Elvar. The Maid of Elvar is a romantic and adventurous tale that showcases Cunningham’s skill as a poet. The poem is filled with vivid descriptions of the Scottish landscape and the characters’ emotions, making it a compelling read for anyone interested in poetry or Scottish literature. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....
