The Magnificent Ambersons by Booth Tarkington is a novel about the rise and fall of a wealthy Midwestern family during the industrialization of America. The story centers on George Amberson Minafer, a proud and spoiled young man who believes his family’s fortune and social status will last forever. However, as new technologies-especially the automobile-transform society, the Ambersons’ wealth and influence decline. George’s arrogance leads him to reject progress and alienate those around him, including his mother’s former love, Eugene Morgan, an automobile pioneer. In the end, George faces the consequences of his pride and learns humility as the world moves on without the grandeur of the Ambersons.
