The Maamtrasna Murders Ireland’s Most Devastating Miscarriage of JusticeOn the night of August 17, 1882, five members of the Joyce family were killed in their cottage above Lough Mask in the remote Gaeltacht community of Maamtrasna. What followed was not justice. It was the machinery of empire in full operation, manufactured witnesses, suppressed evidence, coerced confessions, and a packed jury of Dublin Protestants convened to try monolingual Irish speakers who could not follow the proceedings determining their fate. Three men were hanged. Five more were imprisoned for decades. At least one of the condemned was almost certainly innocent. The Maamtrasna Murders reconstructs the Maamtrasna murders in full, the victims, the community, the land war politics of 1882, and the catastrophic failures of a legal system that valued conviction over truth. Drawing on trial transcripts, parliamentary debates, the suppressed prosecution brief, and the oral tradition of the Irish-speaking community that preserved what the official record buried, Miles McMilligan traces the injustice from its origins in the coercive legislation that followed the Phoenix Park assassinations through the executions of December 1882, the parliamentary campaigns of Timothy Harrington, the influence of the case on James Joyce, and the presidential pardon finally granted in 2018.A story about language, power, and the conditions under which justice is possible, and the terrible consequences when those conditions are absent.
