The Lyrics of Prince is an analysis of the lyrical themes, movements, and development of Prince. McInnis seeks to show that Prince is a lyrical talent on par with Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, and Jimi Hendrix. At the core, the book shows that Prince is a metaphysical poet attempting to reconcile his individual desires in a strict and confining society. Thus, McInnis shows that Prince’s work is a barometer for the sensibilities of the eighties as well as provides insight to the post Civil Rights African American who is grappling with place as an individual, a member of a race, and within the general society. Prince’s work both mirrors and challenges the attitudes of his generation as he is an artist thinking about how best to manipulate as well as solve the fears, pains, and anxieties of his time.
