The Loves of the Angels is a narrative poem written by the Irish poet, Thomas Moore, and published in 1827. The poem tells the story of the angels who fall in love with mortal women and the consequences of their forbidden love. The poem is divided into three parts, each focusing on a different angel who falls in love with a mortal woman. The first part tells the story of Ariel, an angel who falls in love with a beautiful maiden named Miranda. Despite their love for each other, their relationship is doomed as Ariel is forced to return to heaven and Miranda eventually dies of a broken heart. The second part of the poem focuses on Azrael, the angel of death, who falls in love with a mortal named Zara. Despite his best efforts to protect her, Zara dies and Azrael is left to mourn her loss. The final part of the poem tells the story of Azreil’s brother, Raphael, who falls in love with a mortal woman named Aurora. Their love is also forbidden, and Raphael is forced to choose between his love for Aurora and his duty as an angel. Throughout the poem, Moore explores themes of love, loss, and the conflict between duty and desire. The Loves of the Angels is considered one of Moore’s most ambitious works and is praised for its lyrical beauty and vivid imagery. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
