The Love of Azalea is a novel written by Onoto Watanna and published in 1904. The story is set in Japan and follows the life of a young woman named Azalea, who is of mixed Japanese and American heritage. Azalea is raised by her Japanese grandmother and is taught to embrace her Japanese culture and traditions. As a young woman, Azalea falls in love with a wealthy American man named John Armitage. However, their relationship is met with disapproval from both of their families due to their different cultural backgrounds. Despite the obstacles, Azalea and John continue to pursue their love for each other. The novel explores themes of identity, cultural differences, and the challenges of interracial relationships. It also provides a glimpse into Japanese culture and customs during the early 20th century.Onoto Watanna, also known as Winnifred Eaton, was a pioneering Asian American writer who wrote about the experiences of Asian Americans during a time when their stories were largely ignored. The Love of Azalea is considered one of her most significant works and is an important piece of Asian American literature. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
