The Lore of the Unicorn

'The Lore of the Unicorn' is an exhaustive and scholarly exploration of the legends, history, and symbolism surrounding one of the most enduring creatures of myth. In this classic study, Odell Shepard traces the unicorn’s journey through human consciousness, beginning with the earliest accounts in ancient Greek and Roman natural histories and moving through the complex theological and heraldic traditions of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The work delves into the various manifestations of the unicorn across different cultures, examining how the animal was perceived as both a physical reality and a spiritual icon. Shepard analyzes the origins of the unicorn’s supposed medicinal powers-particularly the legendary properties of its horn-and investigates the literary and artistic depictions that have kept the myth alive for millennia. By weaving together insights from travelogues, bestiaries, and poetic works, the book illustrates the fascinating intersection of biological curiosity and creative imagination. 'The Lore of the Unicorn' stands as a definitive resource for readers interested in folklore, mythology, and the history of ideas, offering a profound look at how a singular legendary beast has captured the human spirit throughout history. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
