Between 331-329 BC, Alexander defeated Darius at Gaugamela, the king of Persia was murdered by one of his own governors, the Achaemenid Empire effectively came to an end and Alexander proclaimed himself King of Persia. Within two years Alexander began his invasion of the Indian sub-continent defeating King Porus at the Hyaspes (modern- Jhelum) in the (modern) Punjab. Thereafter Alexander returned to the west to die in Babylon in 323 BC-aged 32 years, forever to be known as ’the Great’ .
