The story follows three African American professional women in Chicago, Illinois, who have been friends since their college days. Each finds herself at a crossroads, navigating relationships and personal challenges while immersing themselves in the city’s vibrant nightlife. At the heart of their journey is Chicago Steppin’-more than just a dance, it’s a way of life and a cultural movement celebrated in cities across the country. Ashland Ashanti Baker is struggling in a no-win relationship, clinging to the hope of marriage despite its emotional toll. Peyton Bianca Spencer is married to an attorney who repeatedly betrays her trust with infidelity, forcing her to grapple with the question of whether to stay or leave. Finally, Dayla Bryce Brody is dealing with the scars of a traumatic childhood, seeking healing while trying to build a life and future that aligns with her dreams. Though their struggles are unique, their unbreakable bond of friendship provides them with the strength and support they need to grow and evolve. As they face personal and relational challenges, their friendship deepens and strengthens, becoming the anchor that helps them find their way through life’s trials. Each woman’s journey is shaped by the others, as they lean on each other for support, understanding, and wisdom-no matter the difficulties that arise. Ultimately, The Lies They Loved is a story about the power of sisterhood, the pain of betrayal, and the resilience of the human spirit.I am deeply committed to fostering community bonds and bringing to life characters whose experiences reflect real-world challenges. Born and raised in Chicago, Steppin’ has been an integral part of my upbringing. After moving to Omaha, NE, in 1980, I founded the Midwest Steppers of Omaha, dedicated to raising funds for young African American women pursuing their college dreams. I believe The Lies We Loved will resonate with readers seeking authentic, heartfelt stories that celebrate the struggles and triumphs of Black women.
