The Last Thane or The Great Conspiracy: A National Tragedy in Five Acts is a historical play written by Francis Worsley in 1862. The play is set in the 11th century and portrays the events leading up to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. The story revolves around the last Anglo-Saxon Earl of Northumbria, Waltheof, who is caught in a web of political intrigue and betrayal. Waltheof is torn between his loyalty to King Edward the Confessor and his love for Judith, the Norman wife of Simon de Senlis, a powerful Norman baron. As tensions rise between the Anglo-Saxons and the Normans, Waltheof becomes embroiled in a plot to overthrow the Norman invaders. The play culminates in the Battle of Hastings, where Waltheof’s fate is sealed. The Last Thane or The Great Conspiracy is a tragic tale of love, loyalty, and political upheaval, and provides a vivid depiction of the turbulent times leading up to the Norman Conquest of England. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
