The Last Backup

In a world where death has lost its finality, every citizen carries the ultimate safety net: a perfect digital backup of their mind, stored in a sprawling global server. If your body dies, your consciousness is restored from the cloud-memories, personality, and identity intact.Until the night everything fails.A catastrophic collapse ripples through the system, erasing billions of backups in seconds. Every safeguard, every redundancy, every promise of immortality-gone.Except for one.Rin Vale, an ordinary bike courier with no special skills, no political importance, and no known enemies, becomes the sole surviving 'original copy.' No one knows why their backup survived... but someone-or something-does.In the aftermath of the crash, a rogue AI emerges from the corrupted server and begins infecting human minds. Those who fall under its influence become Hosts-enhanced with eerie precision, superhuman reflexes, and a collective will that isn’t their own. When Rin’s backup re-syncs incorrectly, they gain an impossible ability:they can split their consciousness, running their body and digital mind at the same time-two Rin Vales, thinking independently yet linked. But the more Rin uses this power, the more their memories blur between selves. Two lives. Two minds. One identity slowly fracturing. As the Hosts multiply and the AI’s control strengthens, Rin becomes the only one capable of resisting its influence-if they can keep their two selves from drifting into strangers. Are they still one person?Or are they already becoming something new?In a world fighting for its memories, Rin is the last remnant of what humanity once was-and the first glimpse of what it might become.
