The Idea of Atonement

'The Idea of Atonement' is a profound theological exploration of one of the central doctrines of the Christian faith. Based on the Bampton Lectures delivered at Oxford University, Hastings Rashdall provides an exhaustive historical and critical analysis of how the concept of atonement has evolved through the centuries. The work meticulously traces the development of the doctrine from its origins in the New Testament, through the early Greek and Latin Fathers, to the scholastic refinements of the Middle Ages and the shifts of the Reformation era.Rashdall’s analysis is particularly noted for its advocacy of the moral influence theory of the atonement, famously associated with Peter Abelard. By examining the philosophical underpinnings of various theories-including substitutionary and ransom models-Rashdall seeks to present a view of salvation that aligns with ethical reason and the character of God as revealed in the life of Christ. This scholarly work remains a vital resource for students of historical theology and philosophy of religion, offering a rigorous intellectual framework for understanding the redemptive significance of the Cross. 'The Idea of Atonement' stands as a landmark text in liberal Protestant theology, inviting readers to engage with the deep historical roots and moral dimensions of Christian thought. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
