The Ice Clan takes place 10,000 years in the past-a time when the great mammals are disappearing and the receding glaciers have left a cold and forbidding climate in the wild lands on the shores of Lake Superior. It is a desperate time for the Clovis tribes of the north who are fighting for survival. Older Man, the leader of the Ice Clan, worries for his tribe, which is now left with only three hunters and one breeding woman: The clan is too small to sustain itself for much longer. They’ll need to join another tribe, and Older Man will have no choice but to surrender his clan to another, stronger leader. Instead, Older Man decides to strike out on his own to start anew in the mysterious mountains beyond, and Older Woman, his lifelong partner, vows to stay by his side. Growing Boy, neglected by Breeding Woman, his mother has come to consider the old couple as his own parents and joins them on their treacherous journey. No one in Older Man’s lifetime has ever attempted the difficult and dangerous journey through the inhospitable ice marshes and tundra. Together, the fragile little group face threats of wild animals, a man-eating clan, nature’s terrifying power, the formidable, dark, cold season, starvation, and their own inner struggles of meaning and purpose. The Ice Clan is a saga rich in cultural and historical detail-a story of triumph and tragedy and the indomitable human spirit.
