This is an authobiography of a lad who grew up on a small farming community in north central Alberta. The author’s father, Albert Hugh Rayment homesteaded here in 1910 and spent his first winter in a tent. After serving three years in WWI he returned to the farm and brought his young bride from England a year later. They worked hard to establish the farm and raise a family of seven children. The author, Hugh was their third born and this is his story. The Rayment children attended a one-room school; Rodino, from Grades 1-9. By the time Hugh was 13 he was doing a man’s work and proud of it. At age 17 Hugh moved to Vancouver and worked at Vancouver Airport for a year before joining the Army. He went overseas and served with the Algonquin Regiment in the front lines. On his return to Canada he again worked at the airport where he took flying lessons. A year later he moved to Edmonton, married Elsie Lyons and they raised 6 children. Hugh worked in the appliance business for over twenty years. At age 40 he attended University of Alberta and received a teacher’s degree in Vocational Education. He taught school for 15 years before retiring to Vernon, B.C. in 1985.
