’The Hound of the Barkervilles’ is the crime novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes. Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (22nd May 1859- 7th July 1930) was a British writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Homes in 1887. Sherlock Homes is a fictional private detective. He is known for his proficiency with observation, deduction, forensic science and logical reasoning. He is characterised in many investigating cases for a wide variety of clients including Scotland yard. This character has been picturised in many events. Holmes popularity and fame are such that many have believed him to be not a fictional character but a real individual. Even ’Guinnes World Records’ lists him as the most portrayed literary human character in film and Television industry. Doyle was a prolific writer. His works include fantasy, science fiction stories, plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels. The novel narrates on crime and focus on Dartmoor. The detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson are called to investigate the mysterious death of a healthy Dartmoor, whose death apperars to be connected with the curse of a legendary, monstrour hound of supernatural orgin. The story is set in the moors at Baskerville Hall and the nearby Grimpen Mire, and the activity takes place at night hours.
