She took to writing at an early age and soon became a popular author, writing for such periodicals as Recreation and Outing. Her first two novels were Song of the Cardinal (1903) and Freckles (1904). She was a devoted naturalist, and her body of work includes seven nature books, two books of poetry, and 12 novels.
