The Guns of Shiloh is a historical fiction novel written by Joseph A. Altsheler. The book is set during the American Civil War and follows the story of Harry Kenton, a young soldier who fights for the Confederacy. The novel begins with Harry and his friend, Dick Mason, serving in the Battle of Bull Run. Despite their bravery, the Confederate army is defeated, and Harry is taken prisoner. He is eventually released and sent back to his regiment, where he is promoted to lieutenant.Harry and his regiment are then sent to fight in the Battle of Shiloh, where they face the Union army led by General Ulysses S. Grant. The battle is intense and brutal, and Harry must use all of his skills and courage to survive.Throughout the book, Harry faces many challenges, both on and off the battlefield. He must navigate the complex relationships between his fellow soldiers, deal with the loss of friends and loved ones, and come to terms with his own beliefs about the war.The Guns of Shiloh is a gripping tale of war, friendship, and sacrifice that gives readers a vivid and detailed look at one of the most significant conflicts in American history. He found that the walking, besides keeping him warmer, took all the stiffness out of his muscles, and he continued on foot several miles. He passed two brooks and a creek, all frozen over so solidly that the horse passed on them without breaking the ice. It was an extremely difficult task to make the animal try the ice, but after much delicate coaxing and urging he always succeeded. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
