The Great White Way is a book written by Albert Bigelow Paine that explores the history and development of Broadway, also known as the Great White Way. The book delves into the origins of Broadway, tracing its roots back to the early days of theater in New York City. It also covers the major milestones and events that shaped Broadway into the iconic cultural institution that it is today.Paine provides a detailed account of the various theaters, productions, and personalities that have contributed to Broadway’s success over the years. He examines the impact of technological advancements, such as the advent of electric lighting and the introduction of sound, on the evolution of Broadway. Additionally, he explores the social and cultural context in which Broadway flourished, including the rise of consumer culture and the changing attitudes towards entertainment. The Great White Way is a comprehensive and engaging history of Broadway that offers readers a glimpse into the rich and fascinating world of American theater. Paine’s writing is both informative and entertaining, making this book a must-read for anyone interested in the history of Broadway or the evolution of American culture.1901. A record of an unusual voyage of discovery, and some romantic love affairs amid strange surroundings. The whole recounted by one Nicholas Chase, promoter of the expedition, whose reports have been arranged for publication by Paine. With drawings by Bernard J. Rosenmeyer, sketches by Chauncey Gale, and maps, etc., from Mr. Chase’s note book. Paine wrote fiction, humor, verse, travel books and edited several magazines; but his outstanding work was a three-volume biography of Mark Twain, with whom he lived and traveled for four years. The Great White Way is his second novel and begins: For more than ten generations my maternal ancestors have been farers of the sea, and I was born within call of high tide. At the distance of a thousand miles inland it still called me, and often in childhood I work at night from dreams of a blue harbor with white sails.
