The Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language is a collection of some of the most celebrated and beloved poems and songs in the English language. Edited by Francis Turner Palgrave, a noted scholar and critic of the 19th century, the book contains works from a wide range of poets, including William Shakespeare, John Donne, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Alfred Lord Tennyson, among many others. The poems are organized thematically, with sections devoted to love, nature, childhood, and other topics. The book’s introduction provides context for the poems and their authors, and Palgrave’s notes offer additional insights and interpretations. First published in 1861, The Golden Treasury has remained a popular and influential anthology for over a century, inspiring generations of readers and writers with its timeless and beautiful verse.1882. Francis Turner Palgrave, was remembered as the friend of Tennyson, the editor of The Golden Treasury and the twenty-first Professor of Poetry at Oxford. He describes his Golden Treasury: This little collection differs, it is believed, from others in the attempt made to include in it all the best original Lyrical pieces and Songs in our language, by writers not living, and none beside the best. Many familiar verses will hence be met with; many also which should be familiar. The Editor will regard as his fittest readers those who love Poetry so well, that he can offer them nothing not already known and valued. The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....
