'The God of the Lucky, and Other Sermons' is a compelling collection of religious discourses penned by the Reverend Samuel W. Purvis. Drawing on his deep theological insights and observations of early 20th-century life, Purvis explores the intersections of faith, daily existence, and the divine. The title sermon, 'The God of the Lucky,' addresses the human tendency to attribute success to fortune, instead pointing the reader toward a more profound understanding of divine providence and grace. This collection serves as a significant example of American homiletics from the mid-1920s. Within its pages, Purvis delivers messages that aim to inspire, challenge, and provide solace to the Christian believer. His writing is characterized by a conversational yet authoritative tone, making complex spiritual concepts accessible to a broad audience. The sermons touch upon universal themes such as character, perseverance, and the presence of the sacred in the mundane.Whether for personal devotion or the historical study of religious rhetoric, 'The God of the Lucky, and Other Sermons' offers a timeless look at the pursuit of a virtuous life and the enduring power of faith. Samuel W. Purvis’s work remains a testament to the vibrant tradition of pulpit oratory that shaped the spiritual landscape of his era. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
