It is set during the turmoil of the Great War. Between 1915 and 1918 in Detroit, Michigan the real life Bob Stevens wrote a newspaper called, 'The Gazette'. His newspapers are the inspiration for this historical novel. Bob wants to be a war correspondent. For practice, he writes a neighborhood newspaper. He only hopes that the war will last long enough for him to get to Europe. Smart, independent Maggie understands the sacrifices war requires; she has two brothers fighting in France. Davy joins the British forces to escape his job in a Scottish mine. As the world is tested and changed by the Great War, so too are Bob, Maggie, and Davy.
