Seven years have elapsed since Marama and her people fled Hawaiki before nature’s unfolding wrath. With the guidance of their ancestors, they navigated the ocean, settling in the welcoming arms of Aotearoa. During the turbulent journey, Marama found herself, and let go of grief to love again. Now, her son must return to the islands, as a prophecy foretold. The three men she loves the most, sail without her. To save their undefended village, Marama abandons her people. Lured into the schemes of an unknown tribe’s ancestors, Marama strives to find a way to survive. Claimed by a brutal chief, she must gain his favour without being dominated. Manipulated by desperate ancestors, she cannot escape and risk losing her children. She finds herself an object of hatred, in a village that places no value on women. In desperation, Marama must win friends, allies and risk placing her trust in sympathetic captors.  The ancestors and Gods offer the only chance for her to reclaim her freedom. Marama will challenge the inequality and cultural fabric of her adopted village. The struggle to hold fast to her humanity and values, in the face of intergenerational evil, taxes her sorely. If she loses the battle, many lives will be lost, including her own. Isolated, lost, the future is weaving apace.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
