The mixing of races was prohibited in Rhodesia. Those born from such a union came to be known as Coloured, an invisible race and one denigrated for its mixed heritage. The story follows the vulnerability of three generations of mixed-race women in a country divided by segregation and with a bush war simmering in the background. Esther, is an orphan left in the care of her uncle who allows her to be violated to pay off his debt. She is then forced to work for Brett where he continues to abuse her physically. His wife Hilda blames Esther for the affair and takes her anger out on Esther verbally. A child Clara is born from the union. Esther manages to escape her abusers. She enters into a loving relationship before more hurdles present themselves when her husband Bernard dies, and she is left a widow. Peggy is Esther’s granddaughter. Peggy is forcibly removed from the care of her grandmother and put into a school for Coloured children. She marries Kenny, who comes from a similar background as her own and the couple has its share of struggles as they both make attempts to overcome their childhood trauma. Sue and Angie are the couple’s daughters. They represent the new race, where both parents are mixed-race. They too, struggle with their own identities as they try and fit into a highly prejudiced society, created by the country.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
