The Farmers Wife

'The Farmers Wife' is a celebrated three-act comedy by the prolific British dramatist Eden Phillpotts. Set in the rustic landscapes of Devon, the play follows Samuel Sweetland, a well-to-do widowed farmer who decides the time has come to find a second wife. With the assistance of his loyal and observant housekeeper, Manda Postlethwaite, Sweetland embarks on a humorous and often humbling quest to court various local women. Each encounter reveals the quirks and social dynamics of village life, as Sweetland’s pride is tested by a series of rejections from the independent-minded ladies of the parish. Known for its sharp wit, rich dialect, and charming portrayal of rural English society, 'The Farmers Wife' remains one of Phillpotts’ most enduring works. It masterfully balances lighthearted farce with a heartwarming exploration of companionship and the search for love in unexpected places. The play’s legacy was further cemented by its immense success on the London stage and its subsequent adaptation into a silent film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. This classic piece of drama continues to delight readers and audiences with its timeless humor and insightful look at the human heart. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
