The Fair Haven is a religious satire written by Samuel Butler, first published in 1873. The book is a fictional account of a young priest named Ernest, who undergoes a crisis of faith and leaves the church to seek truth and meaning in life. He embarks on a journey to find a new religion and encounters various religious groups, including a group of atheists, a sect of Spiritualists, and a community of Mormons. Through his encounters, Ernest becomes increasingly disillusioned with organized religion and ultimately concludes that there is no single ''true'' religion, but rather that all religions are equally valid and equally flawed. The Fair Haven is a witty and irreverent critique of organized religion and a thought-provoking exploration of the nature of faith and belief.This particular design may appear sometimes, but not always, nor often. Thus I think that the particular design which St. Matthew had in view whilst he was writing the history of the Resurrection, was to attest the faithful performance of Christ’s promise to his disciples to go before them into Galilee; because he alone, except Mark, who seems to have taken it from him, has recorded this promise, and he alone has confined his narrative to that single appearance to the disciples which fulfilled it. It was the preconcerted, the great and most public manifestation of our Lord’s person.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
