John Gower (c. 1330 - October 1408) was an English poet, a contemporary of William Langland and Geoffrey Chaucer, and is remembered primarily for three major works, the 'Mirour de l’Omme', the 'Vox Clamantis', and the 'Confessio Amantis', all written in different languages (Anglo-Norman French, Latin, and Middle English, respectively). 'Confessio Amantis', Gower’s best-known work, is a 33,000-line Middle English poem that uses the structure of a Christian confession as a framework. Through the framing device of a despairing lover confessing to Genius, the priest of Venus, Gower explores a wide range of themes relevant to the late medieval period.
