However, in historical narratives, the court politics of the Song Dynasty have often been portrayed as an exception-a model of imperial governance characterized by brotherly harmony, spousal concord, paternal kindness, filial piety, sagely rulers, and virtuous ministers.But was this truly the case? This book adopts the perspective of court politics to reexamine contentious key events in Song Dynasty palace struggles, such as the Chenqiao Mutiny, the 'Axe Sound and Candle Shadow' incident, the Chanyuan Alliance, and the Shaoxi Coup. Breaking free from established conclusions, it seeks traces of unvarnished truth hidden within historical sources, striving to reconstruct the shifting dynamics of political power in the Song court and uncover the reality of palace intrigues to the greatest extent possible.The book divides Song political history into four distinct phases dominated, in turn, by emperors, empress dowagers, retired emperors, and powerful chancellors.
