The Embry Family Cookbook, 2nd Edition has been in the works since November 2006 after Maya Hinton requested family members to add new recipes. In the almost twenty years since the second edition began there have been losses to our family tree, however, thankfully recipes were submitted well before their physical bodies dropped & their recipes have been preserved in this second edition! This Cookbook by this proud Black family with southern roots showcases a love for food and family. The love for food can be felt in the recipes and notes of the home chefs & from the care taken to showcase each recipe. The family photographs include past reunions, gatherings, and other events; some of them center around food--to show that our culinary roots run deep with loved ones cooking from scratch for generations.Food at its heart contains vitamins, minerals, fats, proteins, carbohydrates, salts, and Water; but also DNA, culture, heritage, and love. The food that you consume should be prepared slow with love using ingredients that 'enhances the soul'. Cooking and preparing food is something that we humans have done as a species for millenia, even though many in this country talk and act like it’s taboo. Cooking food is in our DNA and written in the stars so take some time to talk with your elders (before their physical body drops) about their favorite recipes & help to prepare them. This inter-generational activity allows us to co-create with our two opposable thumbs and is part of what makes us human. Wendell Berry has said 'eating is an agricultural act' and Obiora Embry says 'cooking & preparing food is a human act'.As we re-member what it is to be human in a changing landscape, let us not forget how to cook & prepare food slowly for consumption in our kitchens, dining rooms, and other places. Share the recipes in this family cookbook with your loved ones. 6
