The Elizabetha Jig and the Related Drama

'The Elizabetha Jig and the Related Drama' is a comprehensive and scholarly investigation into the lively tradition of the stage jig during the English Renaissance. Authored by Charles Read Baskervill, this work explores the evolution of the jig from its roots in vernacular folk dance and song to its prominent role as a popular afterpiece in the professional London playhouses of the late 16th and early 17th centuries.Baskervill provides an in-depth analysis of how these comic, often musical, and sometimes ribald performances functioned alongside the formal plays of the era. The study examines the textual and musical remains of the jig, situating the form within the broader social and theatrical landscape. By tracing the intricate connections between folk elements and the sophisticated dramatic structures of the Elizabethan and Jacobean stages, the author offers vital insights into the popular culture and entertainment habits of the period. This work remains an essential resource for students and scholars of theater history, Renaissance literature, and folk music. 'The Elizabetha Jig and the Related Drama' illuminates a significant but often overlooked facet of dramatic history, highlighting the intersection between high literary art and the vibrant traditions of the common stage. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
