The Duchess of Padua is a play written by Oscar Wilde, first published in 1908. The story is set in 16th century Italy and revolves around the life of a young woman named Guido Ferranti, the Duke of Padua’s son, and his love interest, Beatrice, the Duchess of Padua. Beatrice is married to the Duke of Padua, but she falls in love with Guido and they embark on a passionate affair. The Duke finds out about their relationship and in a fit of rage, he murders Beatrice. Guido seeks revenge and kills the Duke, but he is eventually caught and sentenced to death. The play explores themes of love, jealousy, revenge, and betrayal, and is considered one of Wilde’s most dramatic works.DUCHESS Alas, my Lord, Such common things as neither you nor I, Nor any of these noble gentlemen, Have ever need at all to think about; They say the bread, the very bread they eat, Is made of sorry chaff. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
