The Dog-Watch Meetings

'The Dog-Watch Meetings, Or, a Revival on a Tramp Steamer' is a compelling account of spiritual transformation and religious fervor occurring in the unlikely setting of a working cargo vessel. The narrative focuses on the informal yet profound religious gatherings held during the 'dog-watch'-the specific shifts at sea-among the crew of a tramp steamer. Alexander Stewart captures the unique environment of the merchant marine in the early 20th century, illustrating how faith can permeate even the most rugged and isolated of professional spheres.Through vivid storytelling, the work explores themes of redemption, camaraderie, and the enduring power of prayer amidst the rhythmic life of the sea. This work serves as both a historical document of maritime culture and a testament to the reach of Christian missions in the 1920s. It provides a rare glimpse into the spiritual lives of sailors, showing how a revival can bridge the gap between hard labor and divine inspiration. The book is an essential read for those interested in maritime history, the history of evangelical missions, and personal stories of faith that transcend the boundaries of the shore. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
