Charlotte, a young woman living in the Overworld and working for a controlling boss named Travis in a traveling circus, is marked by society’s judgment as an 'easy' woman due to her dyed purple hair, earning her the nickname 'Lavender.' She endures humiliation and mistreatment until she runs away, hoping to escape into a nearby forest. There, she encounters a bunny she believes to be dehydrated, only to find that it transports her to the Order of Suits, a world governed by a strict caste system based on card suits. In this world, people are born with card symbols-Diamonds, Hearts, Clubs, and Spades-that determine their social status and role in society.Diamonds represent the elite, Hearts are seen as the charming but morally ambiguous, Clubs embody strength and survival, and Spades are the lowest, destined for labor and servitude. However, Charlotte has no card symbol, making her an anomaly. She is soon revealed to be the prophesized outsider destined to restore unity to the kingdom, untouched by the biases of the suits. The oppressive card caste system is ruled by the Emperor of Symbols, who enforces this hierarchy with the help of the Royal Flush Brigade, an elite military composed of Kings, Queens, Jacks, and Jokers. But there is resistance: the House of Cards, akin to a government, attempts to challenge the Emperor’s rule, though they are constantly thwarted. Charlotte finds refuge with the Wild Cards, exiles who have rejected the card system and live outside its oppressive reach. They reveal her role in uniting the kingdom, offering her the chance to bring change to a broken world. As Charlotte navigates this new world, she struggles with her own identity while facing powerful enemies and corrupt systems. The story follows her journey of self-discovery, rebellion, and her attempt to bring balance to a society divided by cards. Along the way, she must contend with her growing potential, the dangerous Royal Flush Brigade, and the morally complex figures of the House of Cards, all while uncovering secrets about the true nature of the Order of Suits.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present.
