Set in the early 20th century, a time when women’s roles in society were undergoing monumental changes, a young Irish woman, Sharon McGee, leaves her New York family and friends to embark on a new life in Savannah, Georgia. Her love of numbers landed her an accountant job working for a shipping firm based in County Wexford, Ireland. The job includes lodging in a boarding house with other Irish young women who are nursing students. She quickly discovers that Savannah is a town that nurtures her abilities to create a new life in business and love. But the affairs of the heart are more difficult to manage than numbers on a spreadsheet, and Sharon soon finds herself being courted by two very different men. The choice between the one who is willing to be her partner and the one who is focused only on marriage, leaves her torn. Soon, her newfound stability becomes threatened when she discovers the real reason behind why she was hired and finds herself on the brink of losing her job, room and board, and her heart. But she must be true to herself, even if it breaks her heart in the process.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
