Suicide has been on the rise, and many trained clinical professionals aren’t sure how to treat people who are suicidal. We just can’t be afraid of suicide, it is preventable most of the time. The more we educate ourselves about suicide, the less fearful we will be. As we become more comfortable talking about suicide we’ll become less reluctant to talk to the person who is suicidal. Sometimes just being able to talk to someone is all it takes for the suicidal person to begin to believe that they do belong and they are not a burden. This is the beginning of hope.This book offers a concise description of the neurobiological underpinnings of suicidality. It includes a cadre of psychotherapy tools and techniques for clinicians that treat people who are suicidal. It also explains how to create an intensive outpatient program for people who have just been discharged from the hospital after an acute suicidal episode.
