This novel is set on the Polish Front during the First World War, and follows an Englishman working for the Red Cross on the Russian side. An enthusiastic observer of human nature, he is profusely empathetic and analytical, and becomes enthralled by the complex relationships of his fellow medics. Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole (1884 - 1941) was English novelist who was born in New Zealand. This volume is being republished now in an affordable, modern edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
