The Cid is a historical play written by Robert Southey. It is based on the life of Rodrigo Daz de Vivar, a Castilian nobleman and military leader who lived in the 11th century. The play portrays the character of El Cid as a brave and honorable warrior who fights for his king and country. It also depicts his personal life, including his love for his wife, Jimena, and his loyalty to his friends and allies. The play is divided into five acts and includes several memorable scenes, such as the famous duel between El Cid and the Count of Barcelona. The Cid is considered one of Southey’s most important works and is highly regarded for its historical accuracy and literary value. In those days arose Rodrigo of Bivar, who was a youth strong in arms and of good customs; and the people rejoiced in him, for he bestirred himself to protect the land from the Moors. Now it behoves that ye should know whence he came, and from what men he was descended, because we have to proceed with his history. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world’s literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
