Students with disabilities often have unique abilities and can be considered 'out-of-the box' thinkers, much to the amazement of teachers and employers. Schlain has striven to enable students with disabilities to succeed in life. She has worked to establish a ten-county center-based program for students with emotional disabilities, taught in a psychiatric hospital, worked with students with learning disabilities, and was a special education coordinator in Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Her interests include playing duplicate bridge, traveling, reading, and walking her wonderful dog, BooBerry.
