Carrie Spinney Grover (1879-1959) grew up in a rural Nova Scotia community where singing accompanied every task, every gathering and evening at the hearth - songs carried across generations from British, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh ancestors and brought home from sailing ships and lumber camps by her father and brothers. After her family’s move to Maine, Grover spent her adult life working to preserve this vanishing tradition, corresponding with Alan Lomax and other folk song collectors, recording for the Library of Congress, and compiling manuscripts that went largely unpublished in her lifetime. This volume, the culmination of over two decades of research by Julie Mainstone Savas, unites Grover’s one printed songbook with previously unpublished manuscripts and recordings to present for the first time Grover’s complete collected repertoire of 235 songs and tunes. Including her own recollections and family history, plus headnotes tracing each song’s source, this is one of the richest single-family song collections ever assembled, essential for folk musicians, researchers, and ballad-lovers alike. 6
