William Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) was an English novelist and playwright, best known for The Woman in White and The Moonstone. The Black Robe is an epistolary novel relating the misadventures of Lewis Romaine who kills a man in a duel while visiting his dying aunt in Bologna and is pursued back to England by the dead man's brother.
