The Betrothal is a sequel to the popular fairy play, The Blue Bird, written by Belgian author Maurice Maeterlinck. This play is divided into five acts and eleven scenes, and it was first published in 1918. The story follows the lives of two siblings, Tyltyl and Mytyl, who embark on a magical journey to find the Blue Bird of Happiness. In this sequel, Tyltyl and Mytyl are now grown up and preparing for their marriage. However, their plans are disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious stranger who claims to be the Blue Bird. As the story unfolds, the characters are faced with a series of challenges, including a battle with the forces of darkness and a journey through the Land of Memory. Along the way, they learn important lessons about love, friendship, and the true meaning of happiness. Maeterlinck’s writing style is poetic and lyrical, and he uses a variety of literary techniques to create a dreamlike atmosphere. The play is filled with symbolism and allegory, and it explores themes of spirituality, morality, and the human condition. Overall, The Betrothal is a captivating and thought-provoking play that will appeal to anyone who enjoys fairy tales, fantasy, or philosophical literature. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
