The Belton Estate is a novel written by Anthony Trollope, first published in 1866. The story revolves around Clara Amedroz, a young woman who, after the death of her father, is left with a small income and no prospects of marriage. She is forced to leave her childhood home and move in with her brother and his wife, who do not treat her kindly. Clara is then introduced to Will Belton, her cousin, who has returned from Australia to claim his inheritance, the Belton Estate. Will and Clara form a close friendship and he proposes marriage to her, but she is hesitant to accept due to her lack of financial security. The novel explores themes of love, family, and social class, as Clara struggles to navigate her way through the expectations of society and her own desires. Trollope’s richly drawn characters and intricate plot make The Belton Estate a classic of Victorian literature. It is said of those who are small and crooked-backed in their bodies, that their minds are equally cross-grained and their tempers as ungainly as their stature. But no one had ever said this of Mary Belton. Her friends, indeed, were very few in number; but those who knew her well loved her as they knew her, and there were three or four persons in the world who were ready at all times to swear that she was faultless. It was the great happiness of her life that among those three or four her own brother was the foremost. Will Belton’s love for his sister amounted almost to veneration, and his devotion to her was so great, that in all the affairs of his life he was prepared to make her comfort one of his first considerations. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
