The Bard of Mary Redcliffe is a historical novel written by Ernest Lacy and published in 1910. The book is set in the 15th century and tells the story of John Lydgate, a monk and poet who served at the Benedictine monastery of Bury St. Edmunds. The story follows Lydgate as he travels to Bristol to visit the church of Mary Redcliffe. There, he meets a group of local poets who challenge him to a poetry contest. Lydgate accepts the challenge and begins to compose a series of poems that celebrate the beauty and history of Bristol. As Lydgate works on his poems, he becomes increasingly involved in the life of the city. He meets a young woman named Alice who becomes his muse and inspires some of his most beautiful poetry. He also becomes embroiled in a political conflict between the city’s mayor and a group of wealthy merchants. As the poetry contest approaches, Lydgate faces mounting pressure to produce his best work. He struggles with self-doubt and the fear of failure, but ultimately finds the inspiration he needs to create a masterpiece that wins the contest and secures his place as one of England’s greatest poets. The Bard of Mary Redcliffe is a richly detailed and engaging historical novel that brings to life the sights, sounds, and people of 15th century Bristol. It is a celebration of poetry, creativity, and the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity and achieve greatness. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
