'The Ash Gate' is a fantasy epic set in a land scarred by the lingering Gloom of an ancient war. The story follows Lianna, a young orphan whose quiet village life is shattered when it is brutally massacred by the king’s army. She escapes, learning that she is being hunted for the birthmark on her wrist-a symbol that marks her as the last descendant of a royal bloodline, whose very essence is the key to opening the legendary Ash Gate.Guided by cryptic allies like the wise hedge witch Morwenna and the gruff but kind tinker Silas, Lianna embarks on a perilous journey to the hidden sanctuary of Aeridor. There, she meets Kaelen, the zealous leader of a rebellion sworn to open the Gate and expose the lies of the ruling King Theron. Lianna is trained to be their weapon, the key to freeing a long-imprisoned hero and cleansing the land of the Gloom. However, Lianna’s own research into forbidden lore reveals a far more terrifying truth: the Gate is not a prison for a hero, but a cage holding a mindless, world-consuming entity, with the hero Valerius acting as its eternal, tormented warden. She discovers that both the rebels’ plan to open the Gate and the king’s plan to reinforce it would lead to ultimate disaster. Realizing she is a pawn in a game where both sides are wrong, Lianna rejects her role as a simple key. Embracing the true, protective nature of her power-the Seal of Solace-she forges her own path. In a final, dramatic confrontation at the Ash Gate, Lianna makes the ultimate sacrifice, choosing not to open or seal the gate, but to become its new guardian, healing the world at the cost of her own freedom and bringing a true, lasting peace.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
