The Artist: 'A blistering satire about the publishing industry.'Max has spent the last seven years trying to get his book published, but he can’t publish the book because he can’t find an agent to represent him. His luck changes when he meets a beautiful girl who works for a famous literary agent. They fall hopelessly in love, and all goes well-until he meets the agent and pitches his book. Before he can finish the first sentence, the agent turns thumbs down and tells him to get a day job, and then he (the agent) has a heart attack. Max performs CPR and saves the great man’s life. Overwhelmed with gratitude, the agent decides to reinvent max’s book (which he hates), and turn it into a best seller (which he does), and Max becomes rich and famous-and a victim of the law of unintended consequences as his world spins hopelessly out of control.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
