The book shows that archetypes have become an essential part of existence to the degree that they govern the expectations that surround the social relationships within individual societies. This premise forms the central form of discontent as expressed in the works of Angela Carter. Is it possible that the archetypes have been responsible for the perpetuation of the patriarchal dominance within society? Can challenging the archetypes facilitate the challenge to the gender stereotypes that exist within multiple societies in the contemporary world? Such seems to be the focus of Carter, acknowledging these archetypes to some degree but also inherently satirizing their applicability to the point where recognition of an alternative reality is necessary to the reader. Carter introduces the Jungian framework of archetypes within multiple texts with the intention of their eventual dismantling or deconstruction. Her archetypes are woven deliberately to accentuate how subtle differences in the individual can challenge the universality of the archetypes that have persisted across generations.
