In the wilderness of northern Canada, Sajo and her older brother, Shapian, discover two orphaned beaver kits whose arrival transforms their lives. Given to the children by their father, Big Feather, the playful Chilawee and gentle Chikanee soon become cherished members of the family. As the children care for their little companions, they grow to understand the remarkable ways of the beaver people and the wild country they call home. But when hardship forces Big Feather to trade Chikanee for much-needed provisions, the family is torn apart. Chikanee is eventually sold to an amusement park in the distant city, where he is kept behind bars as a curiosity for visitors.Sajo and Shapian cannot accept that their beloved friend has been taken from them. With Chilawee beside them, they set out on a perilous journey into a world far beyond the forest they know. Their adventure carries them through dangerous wilderness, a raging forest fire, unfamiliar towns, and finally the bewildering city itself. With courage, determination, and help from unexpected friends, the children set out to bring Chikanee home.Tender, exciting, and filled with unforgettable encounters with the natural world, The Adventures of Sajo and Her Beaver People is a classic tale of adventure, family, and the extraordinary bond between children and the wild creatures they love.
